Forget the Oxford and Cambridge boat race: on the measure that matters, Cambridge is easily the better place

According to figures calculated by Accountz, the City of Cambridge is significantly more entrepreneurial than Oxford.

The data shows that Cambridge has a business for every 21 people, whereas Oxford lags behind with a business shared between 26 people.

According to Quentin Pain, chairman of Accountz, “Cambridge beats Oxford because the best science students in the country are attracted to its university. They graduate, and create high-technology firms in the area, doing everything from software to bio-technology.”

“What’s more, the university’s culture of individualism inspires students to do their own thing, which is why so many of them want to go and become entrepreneurs, rather than permanent secretaries.”

The research also found that the most entrepreneurial place in Britain was the Isles of Scilly, with the average business shared between only 9 people. Inevitably, inner London was highly ranked, with each business shared by 15 people. The least entrepreneurial place in the country is Knowsley in Merseyside, with each business shared between 49 people.
