ÅF enables Rudbeck Laboratory to achieve Sweden Green Building’s Gold level

ÅF has played a key role in developing the Rudbeck Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, into an energy-efficient and well-functioning research facility of absolute world class. In a large-scale rebuilding and expansion project, technical experts from ÅF aimed for rigorous energy performance requirements. Now the building has been approved for certification at the Sweden Green Building Council’s Gold level, which is impressive for a facility of this type.

In the project to rebuild the Rudbeck Laboratory, expectations were high. At an early stage the client, Uppsala County Council, communicated its ambition to meet the energy performance criteria required for certification at the Sweden Green Building Council’s Gold level. And in the past few days, the Sweden Green Building Council announced that this certification has been approved.

The activities conducted at a research laboratory are energy-intensive. To succeed in achieving such a high certification level is an excellent testimonial to the skill of ÅF’s consultants, who were responsible for planning and design of electrical, HVAC and sanitation systems and performed energy calculations.

The Rudbeck Laboratory was originally built in the 1990s in what is today called Uppsala Science Park. The building that has now been added is called R3 and was ready for occupancy in 2015. Technical consultants from ÅF’s Uppsala office planned the HVAC, sanitation and electrical installations under the supervision of Section Manager Mats Wiström.

Energy calculations and simulations were performed by ÅF employee Yang Chen, Ph.D. in Energy Engineering and certified expert according to the EU and Swedish Green Building systems.

”The close contact with Yang provided me with invaluable support and his work was decisive in enabling us to meet the requirements,” says Andreas Karremo, Environmental Coordinator at the architectural and project management company TEMA.

Building R3 at the Rudbeck Laboratory is Uppsala County Council’s first certified Green Building. The County Council has decided that all new construction carried out under its management will aim for the same high standard.

In 2015 ÅF won the KNX Award for its energy-efficient technical installations at the Rudbeck Laboratory. KNX is a global standard for advanced control of everything from lighting, heating, air conditioning and ventilation to monitoring and security systems.
