Kemijoki Oy has chosen ÅF Finland to be the engineering consultant in the Sierilä power plant project. The company is planning a modern hydropower plant in Sierilä which will produce zero-emission and renewable energy. The energy produced by the plant would cover the yearly electricity need of about 22,000 households with four members (155 GWh).

“ÅF’s long-standing know-how with Finnish hydropower in particular was a key factor in the selection,” says Tuomas Timonen, President & CEO, Kemijoki Oy.

The agreement, signed on Thursday 12 January 2017, covers, for instance, planning the structures concerning the power plant as well as preparing documents concerning contract tendering. The majority of the planning work will be done by Finnish engineers.

“For ÅF Finland, the Sierilä project is the most significant assignment in the field of hydropower plants so far. The contract we have just signed will strengthen ÅF’s position as a leading consulting and engineering services provider of zero-emission energy production,” says Jari Leskinen, Managing Director, ÅF.

The project is currently waiting for the Supreme Administrative Court’s water permit decision. The aim of the ongoing, detailed preparatory phase is to clarify matters concerning an investment decision to be made later. It will take about four years to build the power plant.

The direct employment effect of the Sierilä project numbers several hundreds of person-years.The power plant would be the last power plant to be built in the main channel of the Kemijoki river. It would support reaching Finland’s national energy and climate strategy goals, and it would also bring more than a million euros of real estate tax income to the city of Rovaniemi.
