ÅF is one of Volvo’s partners in its Non-Hit Car and Truck project, which is supporting its vision that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car. The project focuses on developing new technology to reduce accident risks for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The next-generation sensor fusion technologies provide a seamless 360 degree view around the car.

New safety functions, allowing vehicles to monitor their environment and take optimum action if an accident is about to occur, means that together with partners such as ÅF, Volvo is taking a definitive step towards this vision.

“ÅF is at the leading edge of active safety systems. Being involved throughout a major innovative development project focussing on next-generation sensor fusion technology demonstrates our expertise and our range of capabilities. ÅF has been active in all phases of the project and has been heavily involved in the visualisation tool. We have contributed to developing a sensor fusion platform that combines signals to create a view around the vehicle that is as accurate as possible. This information is used for various functions to avoid accidents and minimise injuries,” says Christian Larsson, Market Area Manager with ÅF Technology.

Volvo is at the forefront of innovative, active research and development into vehicle safety. Its main aim is to prevent various types of accident scenarios. The Non-Hit Car and Truck project marks a major step towards realising this vision. This technology forms the basis for the development of driverless vehicles, which will be able to steer and brake in all types of situation to avoid collisions.

The project, which has a budget of around SEK 80 million, began in September 2010 and will be completed in December 2014.
