Sow some seeds of opportunity while visiting ThorpeWood, Maryland’s greenest mountain retreat at an Open House on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 1–8 PM in Thurmont, MD. Specifically designed for corporate retreats, weddings, and private events, ThorpeWood provides a serene environment conducive to business, celebration and education. A non-profit facility dedicated to conservation and providing woodland experiences to at-risk and under-served youth, this is the venue to hold an event for those who want to make a positive impact long after the event is over.

ThorpeWood is a 155-acre mountain retreat located in the Catoctin Mountains near Thurmont, MD. The venue’s beautiful setting of forests, meadows, an arboretum, wetlands, and a native trout stream provides a tranquil location where individuals and groups can experience growth opportunities through educational programs, corporate retreats, and private events.

A non-profit organization founded in 1993, ThorpeWood has always been rooted in helping its surrounding community. Beginning in 2007 ThorpeWood designed, created and delivered programs customized for “at-risk” youth. These programs provided intense, long-term, customized interventions for emotionally and academically compromised youth from Frederick and Washington Counties, metropolitan Baltimore and Washington DC. The programs have achieved remarkable results for the students and ThorpeWood is very proud of their successes.

The revenue generated by weddings, corporate, and social events held at the venue throughout the year, supports these important non-profit programs. ThorpeWood is recognized as “One of the best” by the Catalog for Philanthropy. Anyone holding a wedding, corporate outing or any kind of event at the venue has the additional pleasure of knowing that his or her event investment goes toward a good cause.

Another feel-good aspect of ThorpeWood is that all bridal, corporate and individual clients looking for a “green” location to hold a special event will find it the ideal location. Director of Events, Julie Parlaman states “ThorpeWood was ‘green’ before green was popular.” The timber-frame lodge is the centerpiece of their environmentally sensitive facility and landscape. The lodge includes 4700 square feet of public space and features many distinctive conservation and architectural elements, which add to the rustic charm and character of the lodge. There are also more than six outdoors locations for wedding ceremonies and limited lodging is available on campus with many more overnight options nearby. The venue is a 2011 “Best of Weddings” pick by the Knot wedding publication.

ThorpeWood’s Open House will enable visitors to see all its unique features first hand and experience the venue in full event mode. In order to experience the property and its beauty, throughout the day guests will have opportunities to tour the property on foot, by tractor/wagon, golf cart or van. Representatives from local businesses (i.e. facilitators, team builders, outdoor activities, hotels and more) will be available to provide information on how they can enhance your ThorpeWood experience. In-house caterer, ML Carroll, Head Chef and owner of Canapés, will serve tastes of her original cuisine. “Our goal is to treat everyone to the serene outdoor experience, delicious food and distinctive activities that a typical ThorpeWood event has to offer,” says Executive Director, Sam Castleman. Though the day is designed to feature corporate outings, social, wedding, and educational event planners are encouraged to attend as well.

ThorpeWood is located an easy distance from Baltimore, Washington, DC and Annapolis, at 12805-A Mink Farm Road, Thurmont, MD 21788–1402.
