Mobile Telephone Coverage in Swedish Mines

Mobile Telephone Coverage in Swedish Mines Allgon and Telia Mobile have together installed a GSM-system in LKAB's iron mines in Kiruna and Gällivare with cellular coverage down to 1,045 meters below ground level. It is now possible for the mine workers in Kiruna and Gällivare in northern Sweden to use their mobile telephones at work even under ground. A distributed antenna system and Allgon fibre optic repeaters provide cellular coverage at the main levels at 540, 775 and 1,045 m below ground level in the Kiruna mine. Also in the mine in Gällivare a 900 MHz GSM-system with Allgon fibre optic repeaters has been installed. The radio signals are distributed to repeaters from two base stations on optical fibres in each mine. The system design and commissioning have been done in collaboration between Allgon Coverage Solution team and Telia Mobile in Luleå. The system is part of a new communication solution for the mining company LKAB provided by the telecom operator Telia. - We have together with Allgon aimed for a cost-efficient system and have achieved the optimal solution for GSM coverage in the mines. Telia's knowledge in cellular systems together with Allgon´s specialised competence resulted in a successful joint-venture. The mine projects are excellent examples of good co-operation between companies, says Ingvar Tiger, project leader, Telia Mobile. -This is an interesting project for Allgon. It is a good example of our aim to move up the value chain, says Bengt Broman, President, Allgon System. Allgon Coverage Solution team is specialised in building cellular coverage in difficult and special environments. The repeater systems in the mines are the most deeply located that Allgon has delivered to so far.
