Global Leader in Travel Insurance Supports Historical Run of the 2013 Tour de France

RICHMOND, Va., June 26, 2013Allianz Global Assistance USA, the leading provider of travel and specialty insurance, announced today that it is a corporate sponsor of Zoe Goes Running for World Pediatric Project.  Zoe Romano, a runner and writer from Richmond, Virginia is attempting to run the entire 2013 Tour de France course in a quest to raise money and awareness for World Pediatric Project.  If she is successful, Romano will be the first person to ever run this historically challenging route. Starting in Nice, France she will cover 30-35 miles per day for nine weeks racing against time to arrive in Paris before the Tour de France cyclists.  This adventure totals over 1800 miles and has an elevation equated to three Mount Everest climbs.

A long-time supporter of  World Pediatric Project, an organization dedicated to ensuring children in developing countries have access to life-saving medical care, Allianz Global Assistance felt Zoe’s run was the perfect example of using travel to enhance the lives of others and is providing financial support as well as travel insurance and travel assistance.  To help put Zoe’s attempt in perspective, if successful, she will run the equivalent of nearly 80 marathons in the nine weeks between May 18 and July 21.

"Zoe is setting out to prove that anything is possible," said Sue Farley, senior vice president of development at World Pediatric Project.  "Having Allianz Global Assistance support this endeavor not only financially but through their travel insurance and assistance services lets Zoe know she’s not alone during this historical run."

In fact, facing the prospect of lost luggage when she first arrived in France, Zoe quickly turned to Allianz Global Assistance for help.  Due to a city-wide labor strike in Brussels which included baggage handlers, the running dynamo landed in Nice, but her luggage did not.  After contacting the travel insurance provider, the company confirmed she was covered for lost or delayed baggage, allowing her to purchase necessary items before her bags finally arrived.*

"We are proud to support Zoe in her courageous effort to be the first person to run the Tour de France while bringing the world’s attention to World Pediatric Project’s mission of healing children," said Mark Cipolletti, vice president of communications at Allianz Global Assistance USA. "Her belief that we can change the world if we dream big, set our minds to it, and work hard, mirrors the values of our company and our associates.”
