ChildFund International announced today that Henrico-based Allianz Global Assistance USA has signed on as the presenting sponsor of its DreamBike initiative. The company’s donation will provide 450 girls in developing countries with bicycles to travel long distances to school. ChildFund is promoting its DreamBike campaign and recognizing Allianz as presenting sponsor during the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, where ChildFund is the “Official Charity of Choice.”

Allianz Global Assistance’s support for ChildFund will help raise awareness of the difficulties girls in many countries face when trying to safely travel to school.

“We’re extremely proud to have the opportunity to partner with ChildFund during the excitement of Richmond 2015,” said Mike Nelson, chief executive officer at Allianz Global Assistance USA. “Supporting ChildFund’s DreamBike initiative is perfectly matched to our mission of helping people wherever they may need it.  We look forward to helping deliver thousands of bikes to girls who can then spend more time in the classroom and less time on the road.”

ChildFund launched the DreamBike initiative in 2014 to assist girls who live great distances from the nearest school and who must travel hours by foot, often over dangerous territory.  According to estimates by ChildFund, for each year a girl in a developing country remains in school her future earning power increases by as much as 20 percent.  Countries benefitting from the DreamBike initiative include Ethiopia, India, Laos, Indonesia and eight others throughout Asia and Africa. Overall, the program aims to connect 3,400 girls with bikes.

“Too many girls struggle to get to school each day across the world. The DreamBike program helps girls access an education and a future,” said Anne Lynam Goddard, president of ChildFund International. “We’re grateful for corporate partners like Allianz Global Assistance who are helping create brighter futures for thousands of young girls.”

ChildFund is currently organizing a 10-Bike Challenge to coincide with the races. Teams are being asked to participate in the challenge by raising $1,000, enough to pay for 10 bikes. Some of Allianz’s 700 local employees have stepped up to participate and will also volunteer with ChildFund at Richmond 2015 events.
