An Allianz Global Assistance Survey Reveals Most People are Able to Keep their Gambling Losses, Flings and Memory Lapses Safe in Vegas

With Spring Break upon us, leading travel insurance provider Allianz Global Assistance surveyed Americans to find out if “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”  The results showed that the famous slogan holds true, with the majority (55 percent) of people reporting that “what happened in Vegas” stayed in the popular spring travel destination.

So what are people hoping will stay in Las Vegas? The survey found that 45 percent of people lost money gambling, while 36 percent have no memory of something that happened in Vegas. Others reported they were hoping to keep quiet that they had a fling (7 percent), became sick (7 percent), sustained an injury (3 percent) or were asked to leave their hotel/casino (2 percent).

For people who replied that “what happened” in Vegas didn’t stay in Vegas, the culprit behind the news traveling turns out to be a classic case of loose lips. Of the 45 percent that said what happened in Vegas did not stay in Vegas, 69 percent reported the incident spread via word of mouth, soundly beating social media platforms (25 percent) and the news media (6 percent).

Nearly 25 percent of people claimed that “what happened” caused them to miss a flight, land in the hospital or have their passport/ID or wallet lost or stolen. Yet, only 16 percent had purchased travel insurance to provide coverage for unexpected circumstances*.

While one might think that Spring Break may have played a part in “what happened in Vegas,” the survey found that most people traveled to Las Vegas for a vacation with family or friends (55 percent), followed by a business trip (17 percent), birthday party (8 percent), solo trip (8 percent) or bachelor/bachelorette party (7 percent), with Spring Break (5 percent) coming in last.

“While travel insurance can’t guarantee that what happens in Vegas will stay in Vegas,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications at Allianz Global Assistance USA, “it can provide coverage and assistance for many unforeseen or unexpected events like covered trip cancelations and delays, lost, stolen or delayed luggage, medical emergencies and more.”*
