AMA Annual Meeting Begins Second Voting Session Today at 9 am (CT)
Nation’s physicians gather to lead discussion on emerging medical and public health issues
The nation’s broadest assembly of physicians and medical student gather today in Chicago to shape the health care agenda of the American Medical Association (AMA), the country’s largest physician organization.
The AMA’s House of Delegates is the policy-making body at the center of American medicine, bringing together an inclusive group of physicians and medical students representing every state and medical field. The AMA uses a democratic process to create a national physician consensus on emerging issues in public health, science, ethics, business and government to continually provide safer, higher-quality, and more efficient care for patients.
Among the proposed policies likely to be considered during today’s voting session include:
- Defining obesity as a disease
- Protecting patients against genetic discrimination
- Strengthening oversight of pharmacy compounding
- Promoting tornado and storm safety
- Banning marketing and sale of high-energy drinks to kids
- Permitting sunscreen in schools

WHEN: The House of Delegates will convene today for it second voting session at 9 am (CT). Voting is expected to conclude today at 3:00 pm (CT). An additional voting session is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow morning, if needed.
