Fjärilen – a Monochrome Building in Steel shortlisted for the Swedish Building Award

Fjärilen (Swedish for "The Butterfly"), a newly constructed apartment complex in Uppsala (Sweden) designed by Belatchew Arkitekter on behalf of real estate company Wallenstam, has been shortlisted for the Swedish Building Award 2017 (Stålbyggnadspriset 2017).

- The challenge for this project was to bridge a gap between two blocks with very different typologies. Since we wanted to design them as monochrome units with the same material on roof and façades the choice fell on steel, says Rahel Belatchew, Principal Architect and CEO, Belatchew Arkitekter.

- We spent some time looking for the right yellow tint. The Harvest Yellow color is bright and warm at the same time, Rahel Belatchew concludes.

About the Swedish Building Award

The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction awards the bi-annual Swedish Building Award to a construction project that uses steel in an innovative, sustainable and architecturally appealing way. The aim is to encourage efficient use of steel in construction and give rise to new ideas and inspirational solutions. The Swedish Building Award attracts architects, engineers and companies to use the properties of steel in order to help build a sustainable future.

GreenCoat color coated steel by SSAB was chosen on the roof and façades of Fjärilen due to high quality standards and sustainability angle having Swedish rapeseed oil in the paint. SSAB has chosen to feature Fjärilen for a worldwide GreenCoat marketing campaign (https://www.ssab.com/products/brands/greencoat/fjarilen-the-butterfly-sweden).
