Essex County Cricket Club grabbed an unrivalled three awards at the recent ECB ‘Business of Cricket Awards’. The awards, known as the BOCAs, have now run for four years and aim to reward innovative and effective PR, marketing and media campaigns that help to increase interest in the game of cricket in the United Kingdom.

As winners of the Best Integrated Campaign, the Best PR/Media Management for a First Class County Team, and the 2010 PR and Marketing Team of the Year awards, Essex pipped Nottinghamshire, Worcestershire and Somerset who each walked away with two awards apiece. The Essex PR and Marketing team also received praise from sponsors and broadcasters who have worked with them throughout the recent domestic season.

As cricket experiences a renaissance in terms of popularity, the value of effective marketing and PR is becoming increasingly salient. Whether this is the proactive marketing and PR which is used to promote the spectator-friendly Twenty20 format, or the reactive PR which is called upon when unfortunate controversies such as the recent match-fixing scandal occur, the value of having a team of experienced PR and marketing professionals is becoming clear.

Speaking after the Awards, Steve Elworthy, ECB Director of Marketing and Communications said: “These Awards have grown in prominence over the past four years and are now recognised as a major event within our cricketing calendar.

“In a season in which cricket has faced a number of challenges it was great to be able to recognise and reward the hard work and creativity that has gone into promoting cricket at a domestic and international level. On behalf of everyone at ECB I would like to congratulate the winners and thank all those who entered, for the work they’ve put in over the past year to help grow our game.”
