SACRAMENTO, CA [March 29, 2016]--Beyond placing mints on pillows, some members of the California Association of Boutique & Breakfast Inns (CABBI) take the traditional turndown service to a new height.  The six inns below each offer unique or truly sweet ways to send their guests off to sleep.

The turndown service Gingerbread Mansion in Ferndale is a long-standing tradition that begins with the preparation of handmade chocolates for the day.  In the evening, when the guests are out for dinner, the innkeepers draw back the layers of bed covers—the soft fleece blanket, the luxurious down comforter and the comforter cover—to allow the guest to choose the different layers and degrees of warmth.  The innkeepers neatly stack the decorative pillows, draw the curtains, light the fireplace, and place the intricately-designed, heart-shaped chocolates on the bed.  Just before the innkeepers step out the door, they give the room a spritz of organic rose water.

Guests of the Pantai Inn on the La Jolla coastline receive the ultimate in pampering with the inn’s nightly turndown service.  The innkeepers lower the lights, play soft music, leave slippers on the floor beside the bed and partially draw the sheers encircling the bed.  They also leave different chocolates each night from Eclipse Chocolate, a local San Diego chocolatier, along with complimentary bottled waters and a handwritten note wishing the guests a good night.  In addition to their standard turndown service, the inn also offers special occasion turndowns, which can include a fruit or cheese tray, chocolate covered strawberries and rose petals on the bed.

The newly-opened Rest, a boutique hotel in Amador County, has a delicious way of wishing guests sweet dreams. For their turndown service, the innkeepers leave dark chocolate sea salt caramels from Annabelle’s Chocolates, which is a small, local, family-owned chocolatier.  They also alternate with freshly-baked snickerdoodles.  Future turndown services may include eye masks and chamomile tea, cucumber slices and ginger water, poems about dreams and a card with exercises to do before bed to ensure a better night’s sleep.

In the heart of Santa Barbara wine country, the elegant Santa Ynez Inn sets the mood for romance with their turndown service. Before guests return to their room for the evening, innkeepers dim the lights, close the curtains and place chocolates on the bed.  They refresh the room by tidying up, replacing towels and restocking the mini-fridge and other items as needed.  They also place ice in the room so that the guests don't have to call down for ice or get it themselves should they want to chill a bottle of wine or enjoy a nightcap.

In Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, guests of the luxurious Farmhouse Inn in Healdsburg are treated to the inn’s signature turndown service.  Each evening, while guests are out for dinner, the innkeepers set the stage for dreams.  They draw back the sheets, fluff the pillows, dim lights and leave a plate of the inn’s signature, triple chocolate chip cookies by the bed.  They also place a container of milk in the fridge.

At the Glorietta Bay Inn in Coronado, warm, freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies and milk are the key ingredients of the inn’s delicious turndown service.  The sweet send-off is provided nightly to guests staying in the inn’s beautifully-restored historic mansion.  The century-old mansion offers 11 rooms combining old world charm with contemporary comforts just blocks from the beach.
