After a successful test period Viking Line will expand the cooperation with Climeon. As a first step all new ships will include Climeon Ocean already in the design phase.

Climeon Ocean is a world leading heat power solution, that utilizes waste heat from exhaust gases and engines cooling water and converts it into 100% clean electricity. With this system, each ship can save up to 750 tons of fuel CO2 savings equal to more than 6 000 return flights Stockholm - Paris.

During 2015 a Climeon Ocean™ has been tested onboard Viking Grace. During the evaluation phase the system delivered even higher environmental and energy savings than expected. Based on the successful results Viking Line have now decided to continue with the Climeon Ocean™ solution.

  • As a first step, Climeon Ocean will be deployed in the design for new ships, says Kari Granberg, Head of Projects at Viking Line. In addition, we are evaluating to retrofit existing ships and to further increase the capacity at Viking Grace.

Viking Grace was, already before this test, the world’s most environmental friendly passenger ferry. With the Climeon Ocean™ this was further improved.

Climeon Ocean™ a world leading heat power solution, that converts low temperature heat (70-120 C)  into 100% clean electricity. For ship installations, the heat sources are typically the cooling water from the engines and exhaust gases.

In a recent analysis by globally renowned analyst firm Frost & Sullivan, Climeon Ocean™ was concluded as being “revolutionary” and to deliver an “exceptional performance”. Frost & Sullivan concluded that they “fully expect this system to take off in the Marine Industry” and ranked it as the world best solution in its category.

Viking Line is the first shipping company to publically announce their intention to deploy this system on all new ships.

  • Deploying the Climeon Ocean systems is one way for us to show that our high environmental ambition is far more than words, says Kari Granberg at Viking Line.

With the system fully deployed, each ship has the potential to save up to 750 tons of fuel and up to 1 900 tons of CO2 per year. This potential is equal to driving a car on a highway more than 200 times around the world or taking more than 6 000 return flights Stockholm - Paris.

  • For us it has been a privilege to be able to do the first marine installation on Viking Grace, says Climeon CEO Thomas Öström. It strengthens us as company to have such an ambitious and demanding customer as Viking Line. Viking Line deciding to include this technology in the design of all new ships is a major milestone, not just for us but for Heat Power as an alternative clean energy source.
