Mr. Adrian Richards attends the UKAAPS Breast Implant Scientific Conference

Aurora Clinics’ Mr. Adrian Richards attended the UKAAPS Breast Implant Scientific Conference last month to discuss the issues surrounding the safety of breast implants. The company who stimulated the need for the conference? PIP Implants.

Much publicity has arisen about the ‘PIP fiasco’ where between 50 -100,000 British women are thought to have had this brand of implants during their breast enlargement surgery. Poly Implant Prothese (a French manufacturer) used to be popular as a low-cost option but are now known to have fragile outer shells with an unusually high rupture rate and risk of genotoxicity.

Aurora Clinics have never been supporters of PIP Implants but Mr. Richards has provided consultations to a number of patients who have been worried about their existing PIP implants following the emergence of this fiasco. Many expert surgeons (including Mr. Richards) have been offering free consultations to patients in this predicament. Frequently, patients are opting to have their PIP implants removed and replaced with more reliable modern options like Nagor, Mentor or Silimed implants.

Aurora Clinics currently often use Nagor or Natrelle implants during their high-quality breast enlargement surgery. Nagor, according to the UKAAPS website, should ‘be applauded as one of the companies who have donated a number of implants to patients who have been victims of the PIP fiasco’.  Mr. Richards is very keen to provide his support to ongoing research into breast implant safety and help raise awareness about the types of breast implants available.

With presentations by a number of expert breast surgeons (including Mr. Richards - voted ‘Home Counties Leading Plastic Surgeon’ by The Daily Mail and ‘Leading Breast Surgeon UK’ by The Independent on Sunday) and accounts from 2 actual victims of PIP implants, the UKAAPS conference was an enlightening and eye-opening success. It has brought awareness to the need for breast implant manufacturers to support such events, training of surgeons and to continue their advances in research and development of their implants to make them safer. According to UKAAPS: “The surgeons concluded that each implant had its own benefits dependent upon the patient requirements and skeletal structure and that no company or surgeon should use only one implant in their practise. UKAAPS will endeavour to negotiate with these 3 main manufacturers Mentor, Nagor and Silimed to ensure that each member and clinic can purchase their implants at the right price through the group purchasing power of UKAAPS to ensure that our member surgeons are not using one implant only due to minimum number requirements from suppliers.”
