Christchurch, UK – Penny + Giles – a leading designer and manufacturer of position sensors, solenoids and joysticks - will be partnering at this year’s BAUMA show in Munich with fellow Curtiss-Wright Controls Industrial (CWCI) group companies Williams Controls and PG Drives Technology.

Products from all three CWCI division businesses will be on show together for the first time, split between stands 121A and 234 in Hall A3. They include position sensors, joystick and throttle controllers, solenoid actuators and programmable controllers for electric-powered vehicles. The products are suitable for a wide range of specialty vehicle applications including agricultural vehicles, heavy trucks and buses, powered access platforms, backhoe excavators, airport fire and rescue vehicles, pallet trucks and floor care machines.

The latest product from Penny + Giles, and another first for the show, is the NRH275DR rotary position sensor, which features a slim, low-profile sensor housing and separate permanent magnet assembly. This new sensor is ideal for specialist vehicle applications in extreme and hostile environments where installation space may be limited. Examples include tip control for articulated dump trucks, bin lift control for garbage and refuse collection vehicles and four-wheel-steer function for city road sweeping vehicles. The lightweight, low-profile design of the sensor also means it is suitable for throttle position sensing and feedback for motorsport applications.

Another recent introduction is the JC8000, a new heavy-duty electronic joystick that has been specially engineered with a number of high-strength features. This makes it ideal for applications in physically demanding working conditions such as skid steer loader controls or where operators traditionally use hydraulic joysticks. The increased strength of the new JC8000 has been achieved by increasing the body material around the area supporting the operating lever; increasing the operating lever’s diameter; and changing its pivot geometry. These fundamental changes have enabled the joystick to handle increased torque and improved the lever’s bending and applied loads.

Designed for the most challenging applications, the JC8000 can withstand a 380Nm overload on the X and Y axes and 2000Nm on the vertical. It has also been tested to more than 60 million operations (15 million cycles) under laboratory conditions.

For hydraulic systems, Penny + Giles will also introduce the new ICT800/820 In-Cylinder linear transducer range. These are the next generation contactless linear displacement sensors that include integrated electronics in the sensor head. The 8mm diameter sensor body contains an inductive coil that is activated by a moving core attached to the cylinder piston rod.

Designed for rugged mobile hydraulic systems, these linear position sensors can be configured to provide analog voltage (0.5 to 4.5Vdc) or CAN SAE J1939 output over a cylinder stroke range from 25 to 1000mm, and operate from 5Vdc or 8-30Vdc.

There is a choice of external or internal flange style to suit various cylinder types and the sensor can operate in pressurized hydraulic systems up to a working pressure of 670 bar (10,000psi).
