Arts1 School of Performance at The Box Studios Invests over £10,000 in Sprung Dance Floors

Arts1 School of Performance has invested over £10,000 in professional sprung dance floors at its fresh new studios, The Box Studios in Linford Wood, Milton Keynes. Staff at the state-of-the-art facility went to extreme lengths to ensure each of its studios were industry standard, including specialist floors and mirrors, by hosting an array of fundraising events to ensure that the not-for profit school could provide these facilities for its students.

Dance classes are a huge part of the programme at Arts1 School of Performance, which offers performing arts classes for students of all ages including singing, musical theatre and song writing.  The provision for dance is second to none in Milton Keynes, with highly experienced professionals delivering their specialisms across classes in contemporary, jazz, street dance, stage acrobatics, choreography & improvisation, ballet barre, body conditioning, ballet, tap, and modern dance.

Rebecca Carrington, Principal and co-founder of Arts1 at The Box Studios, said “Installing sprung floors in our new studios was essential, as myself and the rest of the team fully understand the implications of dancers training on floors which are not fit for purpose.  It was never an option to settle for anything less, even though it is a huge investment.

“We used a company who have extensive experience in laying these type of floors and who have supplied and fitted the same dance floors at Laine Theatre Arts and the Performance Preparation Academy in Surrey - schools which are both industry leaders and have the highest standards when it comes to dance and performance training. We are very excited to be able to provide these standards in Milton Keynes.”

Extensive research into the various floors used by dancers across the UK has revealed that dancing on a floor which is too hard can pose a higher risk of injury.  43% of common dancer complaints are concerned with the ankle joint or the feet, which can be damaged by continuously landing on an unsuitable floor.  Dance studios which do no invest in professional standard industry dance floor leave its students at a greater risk of injury.

To reach the target of £10,000, needed to install the sprung floors in the two studios at The Box, staff and students from Arts1 School of Performance gathered to arrange a vibrant display of fundraising events.  From fashion shows and showcases to Christmas concerts, they held a string of events over the course of a year in order to reach the 10k.  The most successful event was a quiz night, which raised almost £1,000 in just one evening.

Ms Carrington added, “We are so grateful to each and every one of our students and their families for their continued support as we attempted to raise the necessary funds.  We even had some very generous members of the public donating large amounts of money to the cause. Our move into The Box Studios has been successful thanks to the generosity of the local performing arts community.”

Dance classes at The Box are extremely popular, with numerous options for children and adults throughout the week to get people moving.  Students benefit from a team of specialist teachers who have worked with the industry elite, including performing in high end music videos, national and international theatrical and dance tours and primetime TV appearances.  Students of Arts1 at The Box have performed in the West End, nationally and internationally as well as featuring in TV dramas, commercials and film. The staff of industry professionals continue to instil a need for sprung floors, and display incredible attention to detail in their classes to students’ health and safety.
