Fleet Evolution welcomes increase in British car manufacturing
British car manufacturing is up, with a year on year increase of 13% in the month of February. Fleet Evolution, one of the UK’s premier providers of salary sacrifice vehicles, has welcomed the news signalling a shift in the country’s economic woes.
According to figures from the Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), February saw nearly 147,000 vehicles built in the UK compared to the same month the previous year. This represents more than a 17,000 jump on the February 2015 statistics, and means that British factories produced 284,507 units during the opening couple of months of the year. Again, this signals a 10% rise on the same period last year.
Many of the cars produced in Britain are exported, with the ratio roughly five-to-two between exported models and those built for domestic customers. This works out at over 100,000 vehicles being shipped abroad, and around 42,000 destined for the UK’s showrooms. These figures build on the industry's fruitful year in 2015, when a total of 1.6 million units were built – the highest for 10 years.
Andrew Leech, Director of Fleet Evolution said, “This news is tremendous – not only for the British economy – but for the car manufacturing industry as a whole. The industry has struggled to recover since the recession, but such a substantial year on year increase is very promising. With Britain getting back to its manufacturing best, this will give consumers more confidence to invest in a new car.”
The recent success is a complete U-turn from just seven years ago when the post-recession February saw Britain fail to manufacture just 60,000 vehicles. However an increase in the amount of new cars being produced is not only good for the economy. Drivers benefit greatly from modern vehicles thanks to their added safety features for both drivers and pedestrians and up-to-date emissions technology. With technological advances and innovative ways of making vehicles safer, new cars are infinitely safer than those produced even just 10 years ago. Likewise, the savings that can be made on eco-friendly cars can quickly offset the cost of a new car.
