Locum staff possess extended skills says RMR Recruitment, amid calls for ‘Reshaping of the NHS Workforce’

A report by The Nuffield Trust titled ‘Reshaping the workforce to deliver the care patients need’ was commissioned by the NHS, in order to research ways in which the organisation could be re-organised to improve levels of care in the future.  Published in May, the report suggested that skills within supporting workforces should be expanded and developed, while numbers of advanced medical staff should be increased. As the NHS starts to make moves to implement changes, leading locum recruitment agency RMR Recruitment highlights the extended skill sets that many locum medical professionals possess, making them the perfect staffing solution during this time of re-structuring within the NHS.

This call for change recommends a focus on upskilling existing staff as opposed to hiring more as a way to prevent fragmentation within the workforce. Choosing to hire locum doctors and nurses however is an effective way to deploy staff with a broad set of skills to the NHS, helping to realise this goal of a highly trained workforce more quickly.

RMR Recruitment Operations Director, Nicholas Cavanagh said, “There is a growing problem within the NHS of staff not being able to cope with the increasing complexity of a patient’s needs, with this report by Nuffield Trust aiming to address the issue. Although it suggests that less staff are hired in the future, we remind hospitals and trusts of the remarkable skillset that lies within many locum professionals.”

Cavanagh continued, “A locum gathers a broad level of experience through working on placements in various different hospitals and institutions around the country. They are also highly trained and able to cope with any medical situation they may come across, due to learning skills from working with different medical experts in a range of specialist areas. Overall, a locum doctor or nurse is a very well rounded professional due to the skills and experience they gain from working in different places and on different projects, making them the perfect staffing solution to help bridge the skills gap within the NHS.”

RMR Recruitment are Tier 1 suppliers to many of the UK’s hospitals and NHS trusts, representing a varied selection of highly trained locum professionals including doctors, nurses, GPs, HCA locum and A&E staff.
