RMR Recruitment supports BMA in bid to scrap locum pay limitations

Following on from the pay limits that were introduced for locum medical staff last November, the BMA (British Medical Association) has recently voted to campaign against the enforced payment restrictions. RMR Recruitment, the nation’s leading provider of locum staff to hospitals and trusts, supports this move by the BMA and backs the organisations drive in hope of creating a more rewarding working culture that adequately reflects the efforts of the much needed locum staff for the NHS.

Jeremy Hunt, the UKs Health Secretary announced these pay caps as a means to cut spending on agency staff. With the NHS experiencing its highest deficit in history, ‘extortionate’ spending on locums had come under fire as causing the financial problems. Members of the BMA voted to call for the Government to lift these pay caps, deeming them as an ‘insult’ to the skilled profession which is in such high demand. With the pay limitations, a qualified senior house officer and registrar locum earn only as much as a driving instructor and fitness trainer as a result.

RMR Recruitment Operations Director, Nicholas Cavanagh said, “It is hard to see why these agency pay caps have been put in place, when so many NHS organisations rely on locum staff to fill vital rotas and shifts throughout the country. Rather than presenting locum staff as ‘greedy’, the pay expected reflects the need and urgency that is expected of these highly trained professionals, at the very last minute. As a locum agency that aims to place each client in positions with hours and pay to fairly reward these hard working professionals, we support the BMA in campaigning against these cuts.”

A locum professional by nature is called upon to assist the NHS in filling positions at short notice. As demand on the NHS increases, employment gaps are also rising, meaning more and more locum doctors and nurses play a vital role in ensuring levels of care for the UK are achieved successfully. Many medical professionals chose to locum in order to meet their lifestyle changes, such as parenthood, and reliance on a steady wage is crucial to their livelihood.

With over 10 years in industry, RMR Recruitment wishes the BMA well in their campaign, and will continue to strive towards finding the best recruitment opportunities available to the locum doctors and nurses that they represent as the plight to stop the agency pay caps unfolds.
