weActiv sets the pace for UK adults amidst news that 1 in 5 struggle to run further than 100 metres
Running for a bus or the tube might be a daily occurrence for some, however that would still be out of reach according to the British Heart Foundation’s statistics that a fifth of adults say they would struggle to run further than 100 metres. Technological fitness experts, weActiv, are urging the British public to invest in their health while they can do something to change it.
The survey polled a group of UK adults, and found that, in general, their fitness level was much lower than it should be. The eye-opening statistics also revealed that almost half (47%) of adults said that if they went running now, the furthest they could manage would be just half a mile or less. And those who claimed to be able to run a mile, almost three in 10 said the last time they did so was more than a decade ago.
Joseph Powell of weActiv, said, “This news is quite disturbing, not only for the fitness industry, but for the population as a whole. It’s so important that we look after ourselves and take regular exercise. The demands of modern life mean that many of us lead sedentary lifestyles, however the developments in technology mean it’s also now easier than ever to keep an eye on our activity levels. Even if people are just starting out on their fitness journey, or wanting to add on a few steps every day to improve their lifestyles, wearable technology is the best way to track progress.”
Wearable technology has grown in popularity over the last couple of years, developing to meet the demands of consumers. 11.4m wearables were sold in 1Q 2015, which highlight a 200 per cent increase from the 3.8m wearables shipped in 1Q 2014. The global wearables market is expected to reach a value of 19 billion U.S. dollars in 2018, which is more than ten times its value five years prior.
