Benefits of Antioxidant-Rich Diet Documented Yet Again

A variety of fruits, and leafy green and non-starchy vegetables, provide the most nutrient density per calorie of any food choices.

Recent research conducted at Fordham University points to the importance and potential benefits of consuming a diet high in nutrients and particularly antioxidants.

Working with a strain of mice prone to age-related blindness, researchers fed one group a normal diet, another group a lutein-rich diet derived naturally from marigolds, and a third group a diet fortified with freeze-dried grapes.  Grapes are a rich source of several antioxidants.

The mice on the normal diet experienced a 74% reduction in retinal function.  The lutein group did much better, with only a 29% reduction.  However, the mice eating the freeze-dried grapes did even better, with just a 16% reduction in retinal function. They also found that starting the antioxidant rich diets early produced the most favorable results.

“This study provides one more example of the importance of a natural diet rich in antioxidants to good health and maintenance of our bodies,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). “A variety of fruits, and leafy green and non-starchy vegetables, provide the most nutrient density per calorie of any food choices.  They contain both known and unknown compounds that researchers and scientists are continually finding essential for optimal health.”

“Fruits, greens and non-starchy vegetables should form the base of your diet,” adds Dian.  “Increase your intake and variety of these nutritional powerhouses and reap the rewards of better health.”
