We’ve Been Fishing for 42,000 Years Researchers Find

A recent study by archaeologists from the Australian National University showed that humans were not only eating plenty of fish 42,000 years ago, but were highly skilled in ocean fishing

Fish appeared in the human diet around 1.9 million years ago, usually from lakes and streams that didn’t require some kind of boat.  Now a recent study by archaeologists from the Australian National University provides evidence that humans were not only eating plenty of fish 42,000 years ago, but were highly skilled in ocean fishing, often catching large fish like sharks and tuna.

Finding more than 38,000 bones from almost 2,900 individual kinds of fish, the researchers have presented proof that humans of long ago possessed expertise at catching many different kinds of fish that would be challenging even today.  The excavations, on the southeast Asian island of East Timor, provided evidence that the people also consumed small amounts of marine turtles, rats, bats, birds and snakes.

“Once again, all evidence points to the fact that fish and animal foods were a big part of our evolutionary diet,” boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).  “Any trend today toward a vegetarian diet is neither natural nor healthy.  All the evidence clearly shows that we evolved eating a wide variety of foods from plant, fish and animal sources.  These are the foods we adapted to eat, provide ideal nutrition and will deliver optimal health.”
