Emerging natural beauty trends, authenticity, sustainability, allergies, raw materials, and specialist skincare products are just some of the hot topics up for discussion at Natural Products Scandinavia 2016.

Taking place at MalmöMässan, in Sweden, on 16-17 November, the show provides a unique opportunity for retailers and buyers to gain extensive knowledge into untapped opportunities for growth in the Nordic beauty and skincare industry.

According to a 2014 GFK study commissioned by NATRUE, 60% of European consumers are reassured by the presence of labels when it comes to natural and organic cosmetics.  With increasing awareness about clean label cosmetics, authenticity and correct certification has never been more key.

Dr. Mark Smith, newly appointed director general from NATRUE, says: “consumers still struggle when it comes to understanding the differences between labels, what requirements are behind them, and whether or not they offer the same degree of strictness and transparency”.

In the Natural Beauty Theatre, Smith will be discussing the current regulatory framework of the sector, giving a clear overview on the characterisation of ‘authentic’ natural and organic cosmetics in the industry, and comparing the provisions of the ISO Guidelines with the NATRUE Standard.

The market is well positioned for further growth.  He says “continuous advances in the production of natural raw materials” along with research and development innovations have helped drive production.

“Consumers sometimes found it difficult to adapt to natural and organic shampoos for instance.  However, increasingly innovative raw material development, working with ingredients of natural origin, has helped to close this gap by ensuring products have improved function and efficacy; besides being pleasant to use,” he says.

Raw materials are also high on the agenda for Iréne von Arronet, managing director of Nature Treats AB and co-founder of NOC Sweden.  She’ll be giving an in-depth discussion about the demand of new raw materials, and the latest research and developments in natural skincare.  As a popular speaker at the show, Arronet will also be revealing new emerging beauty trends to watch and how these developments come from sustainable and natural sources in the Nordic region.

Although there’s continued growth in the natural beauty cosmetics industry and Scandinavians are some of the highest spenders on green products in the world[1], “organic cosmetics remain at a relatively moderate level in proportion to conventional cosmetics, both in Sweden and the Nordic countries as a whole,” says Henrik Olténg, managing director at Weleda Nordic and chairman of NOC Sweden.

Responsible for Weleda’s business in the Nordic region for six years,  Olténg will be sharing key insights into the continued growth of this category, and how a trade organisation can contribute to the development of a more sustainable, natural and organic beauty industry.

Other notable sessions include:

Skin allergy and how to avoid it – 7 tips to healthier skin

Having performed risk assessments for cosmetic products and make-up for many years, Ewa Daniél, toxicologist and co-founder of AllergyCertified, ‘knows all the ingredients that are worth knowing about’.

Daniél will be sharing her expertise on skin allergies and how to keep the skin healthy in this exclusive natural beauty session.

“When I make risk assessments, it is very easy to see an increased focus and interest in natural ingredients,” she says.

Does a cancer diagnosis change your client physically and psychologically and how can you help?

Jennifer Young, creator of the specialist skincare range Defiant Beauty, will be discussing ways in which a client’s cancer diagnosis can impact their mental and physical well-being – and how spas, salons, retailers and therapists can make a difference by providing the right support and guidance.  Young will also present products from the Defiant Beauty range in a dedicated beauty hour at the show.

Five Beauty Hour sessions

The theatre’s dedicated networking space will also see the return of the popular ‘beauty hour’ sessions, where companies will demonstrate their latest product innovations.  Participants include Jennifer Young & Beauty Despite Cancer, Pavilion Ayurveda Healthcare, OliveAll, Sostar, Laboratoire Altho, Znya Organics, INIKA, CÎME, Maria Åkerberg, o.Moi, Avos AB, Maison Laget, Boutique Nature, and Karethic.
