As few machines were registered last year as in the crisis year of 2009. The market shrank by 23 percent, or almost a quarter, compared with 2012. But many people are now seeing signs that a brighter future is on the horizon.
Komatsu and Gremo are the only companies that did not have fewer registered machines in 2013 than in 2012. Komatsu thereby increased its market share to 24.5 percent. All other manufacturers lost market share. Ponsse experienced the biggest decline, with a drop to 10.9 percent.

And it wasn’t just because of the huge attendance figures and best possible weather.

“This was the vitamin injection the whole industry needed,” said Dieter Reinisch, information manager at John Deere.
He praised Elmia for a well-organised fair with more foreign visitors than before.

“Our impression is that half of the people who came to our stand were from countries other than Sweden. This year’s Elmia Wood was also proof that forest professionals have a pent-up need to update their machinery. Never before have so many innovative products and ideas been presented at a forestry fair. Ever-cheaper and more accessible computer technology is making a huge impact on the advancement of forestry practices.
“To put it simply, we can say that things which only NASA had fifteen years ago can now be bought online for 99 dollars,” explains Torbjörn Johnsen, Business Area Manager at Elmia. “The availability of computer power, processors and sensors is opening up completely new possibilities.”

John Deere is presenting the world’s first forwarder with crane tip control at Elmia Wood 5-8 June 2013. The high-tech Intelligent Boom Control (IBC) system with Crane Tip Control is a major breakthrough on the market and is expected to attract huge interest and attention.
“People have been talking about this for a very long time and a lot of research has been done into crane tip control,” explains Anders Strömgren, head of the Swedish sales company John Deere Forestry AB.

The profitability has just not been there.
At Elmia Wood 2013, Swedish innovator Christer Lennartsson is exhibiting a machine with the potential to transform the harvester from vision to reality.
A few harwarders do exist on the market but most forest contractors have a wait-and-see attitude to them. Christer Lennartsson says this is for several reasons. One is that a contractor may be restricted to using a special harvester head that limits the machine to doing only thinning.

Lars Lameksson has played an important role in the development of modern forestry machine systems. Several times his company LL Skogsmaskiner has reached the stage of being able to start mass production.

“But solving problems is what drives me, not managing factories,” he says.
LL Skogsmaskiner still exists and has been taken over by Lars’s sons although he remains actively involved. His workshop still stands where it all began, in the woods near the town of Ljungby in southern Sweden. Here he has designed and built a number of unique forest machines.

Elmia (http://www.elmiawood.com)’s summary of the 2012 forwarder statistics for the Swedish market shows 335 machines were registered. This is fewer than in the record year of 2011 but in no way a poor result. Machinery manufacturers had believed the forwarder market was strong until the summer but then weakened. In fact, the registration data reveal the opposite was true.
