Emergency Nurses Association Launches Free Online Workplace Violence Course
Two-hour interactive course teaches ways to recognize, mitigate and prevent violence
In response to extensive research indicating that workplace violence is a significant occupational hazard facing emergency nurses, the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) today launched a free online course designed to mitigate violence in the emergency department (ED). “Workplace Violence Prevention: Know Your Way Out”, is a two-hour interactive course featuring video demonstrations and quizzes that can be taken at the participant’s own pace.
This course teaches nurses, managers, and staff who work in emergency care settings how to:
- Recognize workplace violence risk factors
- Apply prompt and appropriate responses
- Implement organizational prevention strategies
- Report and analyze patterns of violence
“Violence in the ED impacts emergency care professionals, the patients and families we care for, as well as our friends and families at home. Our colleagues suffer lifelong physical and emotional scars as a result of the violence,” said ENA president Deena Brecher, MSN, RN, APN, ACNS-BC, CEN, CPEN. “ENA has been advocating for safe work environments for years, and this new online course is another valuable tool EDs can use to address the violence.”
Addressing violence in the ED requires a multidisciplinary team approach. The new course encourages clinical staff and hospital leadership to assess workplace violence challenges and create a proactive plan. The course also reviews how to apply federal and state laws related to occupational safety and health.
In addition to the Workplace Violence Prevention Course, ENA also offers a Workplace Violence Toolkit containing customizable templates and tools to meet the needs of an ED.
