Emergency Nurses Association Launches Institute of Emergency Nursing Advanced Practice
New Institute responds to growing demand for advanced resources and education for APNs globally
(November 21, 2014) – As the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) looks to provide further support to nurses poised to meet the explosive healthcare needs worldwide, the ENA Board of Director’s approved the creation of the Institute of Emergency Nursing Advanced Practice (IENAP).
The Institute was developed as a response to ENA members looking for education, programs and resources dedicated to meet the unique needs of advanced practice nurses (APNs). APNs are registered nurses with advanced educational preparation at the masters or doctoral level.
Since 2010, APN education has taken a new and dramatic focus. A landmark report from the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Foundation, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, recommends using nurses to the fullest extent of their education. Using APNs as part of a multidisciplinary team enhances quality, and increases the number of healthcare resources available to the public.
The creation of IENAP directly supports several of ENA’s organizational strategic goals. This includes developing a premier Institute for global advanced practice education, resources, networking and skill development that caters to the needs of APNs.
“Thanks to member input, the ENA Board of Directors identified the growing need for resources and education in this area, and responded with a robust plan catered to the advanced practice emergency nurse specialty,” said ENA president Deena Brecher, MSN, RN, APN, ACNS-BC, CEN, CPEN. “The Board is committed to ensuring that ENA is consistently recognized as the premiere authority for emergency nursing and emergency care at all levels.”
The Institute will also serve as the leading provider of ANCC accreditation for APN education. An Emergency Nurse Practitioner Residency program is slated for development along with an Author’s Center dedicated to assisting and training volunteer authors.
“The APN field has grown substantially over the past five years, and we now have the resources to further support those nurses’ growing needs,” said ENA Executive Director Susan Hohenhaus, LPD, RN, CEN, FAEN. “The Institute of Emergency Nursing Advanced Practice will serve as an unparalleled resource for our advanced practice nurse members. We’re looking forward to further elevating the status of advanced practice nurses in a way that will allow them to spend extra time with a patient and facilitate patient engagement unlike any other healthcare provider.”
IENAP will work closely with ENA’s three other institutes: the Institute for Quality, Safety, and Injury Prevention (IQSIP), the Institute for Emergency Nursing Education (IENE) and the Institute for Emergency Nursing Research (IENR).
