(June 1, 2015) – The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) today announced the promotion of Josie Howard-Ruben, PhD, APN-CNS, AOCN, CHPN, to chief nursing officer. This comes after Howard-Ruben joined ENA as lead nurse planner in December 2014 and was subsequently named interim chief nursing officer in February.

Howard-Ruben’s extensive background in nursing comprises roles such as a clinical nurse specialist in inpatient and outpatient settings, research including clinical trials, continuing nursing education, writing and community outreach. A Chicago native, she served as lead nurse planner for Advocate Health Care for nearly 10 years.

As ENA’s chief nursing officer, Howard-Ruben oversees the Association’s four nursing institutes: the Institute of Emergency Nursing Education, the Institute of Emergency Nursing Research, the Institute of Quality, Safety and Injury Prevention and the new Institute for Emergency Nursing Advanced Practice. She will further expand the ENA’s educational offerings, research and evidence-based practice resources for members.

“Josie’s leadership skills, diverse nursing experience, passion for evidence-based practice and access to safe, quality care make her an extremely valuable addition to the senior leadership team,” said ENA Executive Director Susan Hohenhaus, LPD, RN, CEN, FAEN. “She brings with her an extensive knowledge of clinical and educational best practices with a drive to innovate and improve. Adding Josie to the team puts us in a unique position to provide even more value to ENA members as we embark on a new five-year strategic plan.”

Howard-Ruben recently received her PhD in nursing from Loyola University, Chicago. She previously served as chair of the Commission on Continuing Education for the Illinois Nurses Association, and was a nurse peer reviewer for the Ohio Nurses Association.
