Saturday 20 October to Sunday 4 November 2012

In the height of summer, few historic sites are as welcoming as Goodrich Castle, but with shadows lengthening, sometimes it is not just the lower temperatures of autumn that sends a chill down the spine, as visitors will find out this October half term, when the site hosts a Hallowe’en Trail!

Those following the trail will be required to explore many different areas of castle, learning a little about the legends and myths that have been told about Goodrich as they hunt for the clues. These include the stories of Civil War lovers lost as they tried to cross the river below, doorways that dogs are reluctant to cross, and spectral figures spotted by visitors and staff in a number of different locations...

“Goodrich Castle is a wonderful place for spooky stories – you’ve got towers, elevated walkways and even a fearsome, dark dungeon, where goodness knows what terrible things may have happened,” comments site manager, Margaret Smithett. “Alongside the traditional stories of paranormal activity here, we’ve added in a few of our own stories based on anecdotes and experiences from staff and visitors – who knows, it may not be long before they join the established folklore of the site!”

Those brave enough to complete the trail will receive a delicious treat from the Castle’s Cauldron as a reward for their efforts!

The trail takes place from Saturday 20 October to Sunday 4 November 2012, and runs each day from 10.00am to 5.00pm each day. Admission prices are £6.00 for adults, £5.40 for concessions and £3.60 for children, or £15.60 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children). English Heritage members get in free.

Goodrich Castle is located five miles south of Ross on Wye off the A40. For more information, please call 01600 890538 or visit www.english-heritage.org.uk/goodrich
