The Sunday Times Travel Magazine’s panel of experts scoured the globe to come up with their “definitive list of affordable stunners”, proving that perfection does not need to come with a hefty price tag.

The Serena Beach Hotel & Spa was said to “fit the bill for an easy-peasy post-safari flop and comes with clean sands, transparent seas and an aquarium-worthy marine reserve. It’s just 30 minutes from the airport and far enough from the city to feel like a proper retreat. Built in the style of a traditional Swahili village, complete with minaret and Omani-style fortress (which houses the ridiculously lavish spa), Serena’s not your typical Indian Ocean clone.
