A statement from Mahmud Janmohamed, Managing Director of Serena Hotels on World Tourism Day 2013 last week.

Serena Hotels Management and Staff are proud to be associated with the World Tourism Day (2013).

As we celebrate the 2013 United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation, let me say that we recognize that water is both an asset and a resource for the tourism sector. We have and we continue to put in place measures that conserve our water bodies as well as provide environmentally sound solutions towards water conservation.

Our tree planting project- “The Serena Greening Initiative” has so far seen us plant over 10Million trees across East Africa and our commitment to reforestation will continue for many years to come. We have also invested in adequate water management in our units across East Africa and Mozambique and continue to offer community support to ensure continuous and sustainable water use and preservation.

Besides these, we encourage our guests and members of staff to observe the 3Rs of water and energy conservation- to reuse, reduce and recycle. This has so far ensured we not only conserve water and energy but also employ proper waste management systems.

We also recognize the efforts by local and International organizations like UNWTO towards ensuring organizations employ innovative solutions that contribute to sustainable access to water resources worldwide.

Let me wish our guests, partners and members of staff yet another year of sustainable tourism.

Thank you.
