Information and Support Day for Families of Disabled Children in Leeds

Families raising a disabled or seriously ill child will have the opportunity to find out more about what services and support are available in the Leeds area on Thursday 28 April at Leeds Mencap, The Vinery Centre, Vinery Terrace, Leeds LS9 9LU.

The event is hosted by Family Fund, the UK’s largest charity helping families raising disabled children, with other organisations offering information, advice and support include Scope, Barnardos, Tuberous Sclerosis, Newlife, Shine, Kids and more.

Families are invited to come along between 10am and 2.30pm with refreshments available.  They can learn more about all the organisations and their support.

Family Fund is pleased to launch free digital skills workshops at this event where families can learn more about using their iPad.  A free soft play area will also be available for parents bringing their children along.

Anna was helped with an iPad for son, Malyn.  This changed the whole family’s daily lives, but also brought challenges with connection issues and limited knowledge of apps.  Anna and her husband received training through Family Fund’s digital skills programme, she said:

“We found the training session extremely useful Ray spent the whole morning talking through mine and Malyn’s specific needs and how the iPad could be useful to us as a whole family. He’s now fully engaged with the iPad and it’s definitely benefitted all the family. My husband and I are both more confident in using the iPad as a result of the training but we only get to use it when Malyn has gone to bed!”

Information and support days are a new initiative launched by Family Fund to bring relevant services to these families in one place.  These have taken place across the UK throughout last year and more planned for the coming year.

About Us

The Family Fund is one of the UK’s largest grant-giving charities which, for forty years, have helped families raising disabled or seriously ill children or young people. It helps ease the additional pressures faced by low-income families raising a disabled child by giving them grants for a wide range of goods and services, including washing machines, dryers, fridges, clothing, bedding, sensory toys, computers, much-needed family breaks and more, but also give grants for items to aide a better night’s sleep such as beds, bedding, sleep monitors and blackout blinds. Across the UK last year, the Fund supported 64,020 families with £33 million in funding, 5,000 more than the previous year. Family Fund receives grants from private donors as well as each of the four UK governments.
