On the 19 of September 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Director General of SE Ignalina nuclear power plant (INPP) Mr. Darius Janulevicius, and Executive Vice President, Smart Industry and Energy systems of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd Mrs. Erja Turunen.

The document supports developing business and research cooperation, as well as promoting joint solutions and services in the fields of nuclear facilities decommissioning and radioactive waste management to international market.

"Ignalina NPP, the state enterprise of Republic of Lithuania, is carrying out decommissioning of the INPP that features two largest RBMK-1500 reactors, which includes managing plant safety through the key safety systems, unloading of spent nuclear fuel, equipment and building decontamination and dismantling, as well as radioactive waste treatment and storage. Our decommissioning activities are co-financed by the European Union. Co-operation in the field of nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management with VTT as the leading research and technology centre in Finland is very appreciated by us. We aim at conducting decommissioning in more cost-efficient way while adhering to high standards of safety. We have a goal of becoming experts on safe and efficient nuclear facilities decommissioning. I am sure that co-operation with VTT contributes to that. The Memorandum of Understanding is the first such document in the history of our enterprise and this is an important step towards selling its unique experience in decommissioning" – Director General of INPP Darius Janulevicius commented at the signing of the Memorandum.

"VTT has extensive knowledge in nuclear safety, including research and development of final disposal of radioactive waste. With this memorandum of cooperation we can export this knowledge together with our partners”, states Erja Turunen, Executive Vice President, Smart Industry and Energy systems of VTT.
