Finnair’s traffic measured in available seat kilometres increased by 15.3% in August

In August, Finnair carried 1,205,300 passengers, 11.5% more than in the corresponding period of 2017. The number of passengers grew in Asian traffic 13.4%, European traffic 12.2%, North America traffic 11.8% and domestic traffic 5.0%.

Finnair's overall capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) increased in August by 15.3% year-on-year. Finnair's traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs) grew by 13.0%. The high ASK growth rate was reflected in the Passenger Load Factor (PLF), which decreased year-on-year by 1.7 points to 84.1%.

In August 48% of Finnair's ASKs were in Asian traffic, 41% on European routes and the rest in North American and domestic traffic. The ASK growth in Asian traffic was 11.3% and was mainly directed at frequency additions to Tokyo and Bangkok and to the new route opening to Nanjing. In North American traffic ASKs increased by 14.5%, mostly due to additional frequencies to Chicago.

The 20.7% ASK growth in European traffic derived from the increase in the narrow-body fleet size year-on-year and the additional seating capacity added to some of the existing narrow-body aircraft. The added capacity was seen in frequency additions to several destinations in Northern and Central Europe, particularly to Vilnius and Tallinn. New route openings to Stuttgart, Lisbon and Minsk after the corresponding period increased the European traffic too. ASK growth in domestic traffic increased by 11.4%. In the comparison period domestic traffic was affected by traffic restrictions in Oulu airport due to a runway renovation. The year-on-year growth is also attributable to operational adjustments between destinations from shorter to longer routes.

RPKs grew by 13.0% in Asian traffic, 13.8% in European traffic, 11.3% in North American traffic and 7.5% in domestic traffic. The PLF was 91.8% in Asian traffic, 76.1% in European traffic, 87.8% in North American traffic, and 60.3% in domestic traffic. The PLF in total traffic decreased by 1.7 points to 84.1%.

Available scheduled cargo tonne kilometres increased by 13.2% year-on-year. Revenue scheduled cargo tonne kilometres increased by 6.1% mostly driven by the positive cargo market development in Japan and Hong Kong and due to the capacity growth on route to Thailand. Finnair’s total cargo capacity includes three weekly freighter flights between Helsinki and Brussels, operated by DHL. Cargo flight volumes decreased from the comparison period when Finnair rented cargo space from Japan Airlines.

The Helsinki-Vantaa airport’s runway renovation and technical problems caused delays and cancellations, especially in domestic and European traffic, which was reflected in the punctuality. In August 82.5% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (87.5).

Traffic statistics for September 2018 will be published on Tuesday, 9 October 2018.
