Mall of the Emirates Car Park Evolution Features Flowcrete

Flowcrete Middle East has begun to supply 40,000 square metres of the car park coating solution Deckshield to Mall of the Emirates (MOE), located in Dubai, for the latest phase in its AED 1 billion redevelopment.

A new car park level is currently being constructed by the MOE as part of its Evolution 2015 series of upgrades. Begun in 2014, this project will enhance the popular retail destination with new shopping, dining and leisure facilities, including the UAE’s largest cinema.

Ensuring a quality customer experience is essential for the MOE, which is famous for delivering a luxurious retail environment alongside renowned tourist attractions such as Ski Dubai and the Magic Planet entertainment complex. The MOE recognised the importance that its car parking facilities would play in delivering high-levels of customer satisfaction once the redevelopment work has been concluded.

To accommodate the site’s enlarged visitor capacity it was vital for the mall to increase the number of available car parking spaces. To meet this need and provide an additional 1,300 spaces the MOE has added a new fourth level to its parking structure.

This exposed deck will need to be able to maintain an effective, visually appealing surface despite the challenges that the site’s future use will inflict on the floor. Exposure to the elements, continuous movement of heavy vehicles, spillages of automotive oils and fuel as well as intense sunlight could all lead to the quick deterioration of the finish unless properly protected against.

To meet these challenges the environmentally friendly car park deck coating system Deckshield was specified. Flowcrete Middle East has now begun to deliver its flooring material to the site and the flooring project is on schedule to meet its late 2015 completion deadline.

Flowcrete Middle East’s Vik Vithlani said: “As one of the region’s most prestigious retail establishments, it was important for the MOE to have a car park environment that creates a fantastic first impression on arriving visitors.

“To achieve this we’ve supplied a colourful Deckshield floor that will be able to maintain an unblemished surface for an extended period of time – meaning that the thousands of people using the facility every day will enter a space that consistently conveys the mall’s trademark high standards and attention to detail.”

Deckshield from Flowcrete Middle East has been designed around the dual principles of durability and appearance. The full polyurethane formulation of this system makes it incredibly hard wearing in comparison to hybrid systems, which instead combine a polyurethane topcoat with an epoxy primer.

The epoxy primer used in hybrid systems means that the final finish is rigid and brittle, therefore making it more prone to failure than the polyurethane primer of Deckshield. This flexibility makes Deckshield better able to withstand the deflection within the slabs or decks of car parks that are caused by intense multiflow traffic.

This robust nature means that the bright, eye catching floor design won’t fade over time. The seamless, easy to clean finish Deckshield creates also helps a site’s cleaning regime to avoid stains and spillages spoiling the floor’s appearance.

Flowcrete Middle East is no stranger to large-scale car park flooring projects, as it supplied the Dubai Mall with 500,000 square metres of Deckshield in 2012. The longevity that can be achieved from such an installation is exemplified by the floor finish at the Deira City Centre’s car park, which is still fully functional despite being completed 15 years ago.
