Buckinghamshire dementia specialist shortlisted for national award

Marie Shouler, manager of the Woodlands Park Care Centre in Great Missenden has been shortlisted for a prestigious award which recognises the high standard of care and innovation with which she and her team look after residents with dementia.

Marie has been shortlisted for the National Dementia Care Personality in the Dementia Care Awards, organised by the Journal for Dementia Care.  The category highlights the work of those whose personality and energy has made a difference in ways that are truly inspiring and memorable. 

Paul Musgrave, chief executive of the Forest Healthcare group of homes, believes the shortlisting is very well deserved. "The way Marie approaches dementia care is superb, enabling those with symptoms to continue to live fulfilling, happy lives. At Woodlands, she has created a welcoming and stimulating environment, where residents are loved and cared for by a stable, skilled and enthusiastic staff, which we often use as a model of excellence in dementia care. We wish her the very best of luck at the ceremony in November when the winner is announced."

Indeed, Marie’s expertise in looking after those living with dementia is not limited to the walls of the Woodlands Care Home.  Marie is currently working with local businesses to make the village of Great Missenden as dementia friendly as it can be, with workshops planned for business owners on how they can make life easier for the growing number of people living with dementia.

Marie was delighted and surprised by the shortlisting. "We are all so focused on making sure that all of our residents have the very best quality of life when living with dementia that we often take for granted that what we think of as 'normal' is actually some of the best practice around.  Our residents are like family to us, and you always want the very best for your family."

The winners will be announced at a celebratory awards ceremony on 11 November at the Hilton Brighton Metropole.
