South African broadcast service provider buys compact HD trailer with Hitachi cameras

Watford, UK, 15 July 2014 – South African broadcast services provider Vision View Productions has invested in OBLite, the compact HD OB trailer from Gearhouse Broadcast, a leading broadcast solutions supplier. The live production HD OB trailer, launched at IBC2013, provides an affordable and more flexible OB option within a compact footprint.

Vision View’s first use of OBLite was for a local basketball tournament in South Africa, but the trailer will mainly be used for its live rugby and football coverage.

“We were looking for a flexible, mid-sized OB that could be parked anywhere. We looked at the smaller OB vans but they didn’t quite match our needs, but OBLite fitted the bill,” said Mafadi Mpuru, managing director at Vision View. “One of the main considerations for us was having zero compromise on quality. Also any investment had to be something with up to date technology that we can use for more than just a few years. Gearhouse Broadcast delivered a solution that was cost effective but met all of our requirements.”

The OBLite trailer supports six to eight cameras, houses a seven- to eight-person production and operation crew. It offers low power consumption, ergonomic design and features a production gallery, audio workstations and an engineering control area. It features an end-to-end live HD production workflow and is kitted out with eight Hitachi cameras channels, including seven SK-HD1200 cameras and a SK-HD1500 slow motion camera, a Ross Carbonite vision mixer, Studer Vista audio mixer, an EVS XT2 six channel server and Marshall video monitors, along with full talkback capabilities.

“Vision View covers a range of live sports events, including many at smaller venues. OBLite is designed for exactly this type of application and will give them the flexibility they need without any compromise on image quality,” said Nigel Haniff, account manager at Gearhouse Broadcast. “With OBLite we’ve targeted a very specific gap in the market. By offering customers like Vision View a trailer that offers the full range of OB functionality we’re providing a flexible solution that’s ideal for covering a wide range of events in a very cost effective way.”
