DOUGLAS KIRKLAND is so much more than the iconic images of celebrities that havemade him so famous. He has amassed an impressive body of work throughout his 60-yearphotography career, his images running the gamut from stars and filmmakers, to classics andcollectibles, to love and nudes. In A Life in Pictures: The Douglas Kirkland Monograph, thephotographer presents a collection of his images accompanied by a story of his career’sdevelopment told from his perspective , through a 40,000 word autobiographical text, analmost unheard of accompaniment to a photography monograph. As a young Canadian artist,Kirkland took his first photo on a frosty Christmas morning in front of his family’s Ft. Eeriehouse. With his love for photography sparked and sealed in that moment, he eventually workedfor such publications as LOOK and Life magazines. Kirkland’s career took off with his legendary1961 Marilyn Monroe shoot for LOOK’s 25th anniversary issue, the photographs from which arestill recreated by stars today. With a foreword by acclaimed director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Catherine Martin, this written and visual memoir is, finally, a comprehensive collection ofimages honoring the important photographer who has assiduously recorded and shapedcontemporary culture through his exceptional eye and incomparable lens.

DOUGLAS KIRKLAND has given us some of culture’s most iconic images. He has perfected hiscraft over the past six decades, traveling to six continents and working as a specialphotographer on more than 160 motion picture sets, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sound of Music, Out of Africa, Moulin Rouge!, and The Great Gatsby. He has photographed Charlie Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot, John Wayne, Sean Connery, Elizabeth Taylor,Judy Garland, Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, and Nicole Kidman, among hundreds of others.When not traveling to take photos, Kirkland lives in the Hollywood Hills with his beloved wifeand business partner, Françoise. Kirkland’s other Glitterati titles include Freeze Frame: 5Decades/400 Photographs, Coco Chanel: Three Weeks/1962, Michael Jackson: The Making ofThriller, and With Marilyn: An Evening/1961.

BAZ LUHRMANN and CATHERINE MARTIN are a film powerhouse couple, collaborating on filmssuch as Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, Australia, and The Great Gatsby. Luhrmann is anaward-winning Australian film director, screenwriter, and producer. His wife, Martin, won two Academy Awards for her art direction and costume design for Moulin Rouge!.
