Almost 80 % of the forests defined as important by reindeer herders and Greenpeace in 2002 have now been set outside of forestry either permanently or for the next 20 years. This is the result of recent negotiations and earlier protection decisions since 2006.
Greenpeace and reindeer herders started their joint campaign for reindeer grazing forests in 2002. A key demand from the demonstration was for Finnish MPs to vote against the ministers’ irresponsible plan of authorizing the construction of two new nuclear reactors.
"We gathered today to urge the MPs to reject the construction of two new nuclear reactors. These plans would turn Finland into a massive exporter of nuclear electricity and the world's largest producer of nuclear waste per person. The banner reads "Jyrki rules, Mauri obeys, Finland bears the risk", criticizing the ruling center party minister Mauri Pekkarinen for making a dirty deal with concervatives, a minority party in the cabinet, led by finance minister Jyrki Katainen. The decision will need an approval from the parliament, and the activists are calling on the MPs to reject the deal.

Helsingin Sanomat ran today a story that the start of the commercial operation of the Olkiluoto 3 plant will be delayed even further than 2012. Originally the plant was supposed to be up and running by 2009. The construction company Areva still claims to make it operational by 2012 but their Finnish customer TVO is no longer as positive. TVO project director Jouni Silvennoinen refuses to give his own estimation on the timetable. They climbed to one of the cranes with a banner saying “more nuclear waste to our children” in Finnish. The activists call for an end to nuclear construction because of the health and environmental hazard caused by nuclear waste. Building another reactor in addition to Olkiluoto 3 would make Finland the largest producer of nuclear waste in the world on a per capita basis.

They have hanged a banner that demands stopping CO2 emissions and nuclear power.
They are taking action to expose the climate bluff of the nuclear industry, carrying banners reading “Stop coal and nuclear”. The Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant was supposed to help close down dirty coal and peat fired power plants. Now the owners of the new reactor, far from cutting down on the use of dirty fuels, are building new polluting power stations. The law suit filed in 2005 by three Saami reindeer herders was settled with an agreement between the reindeer herders and Metsähallitus.
The agreement published today saves the majority of mature forests in the area for the next 20 years. This means that practically all old-growth forests and important reindeer pastures of Nellim are protected until 2029.
