The GirdIron Classic presented by Reliant Energy is giving Houston youth the opportunity to learn health education and secrets to success by former and current pro-athletes.

HOUSTON, TX (May 31st, 2012) - - NFL players and celebrities are preparing to participate in the GridIron Classic (GIC), a fun-filled weekend of events that provides opportunities for fans to meet, play alongside, and learn from pro-athletes in the industry. From June 29th through June 30th, the GIC which was developed by former Miami Dolphin player Alphonso Roundtree, will engage Houston youth in the importance of healthy living through fitness, nutrition, and life skills education. “With 58% of adults and 39% of children being classified as overweight or obese in the Greater Houston community, we have a huge problem,” says Roundtree. “It’s so important that we educate our youth at an early age on how to adhere to a healthy lifestyle so that they become accustomed when they grow older.”

The GIC kick starts June 29th at 10pm with a Celebrity Meet & Greet at Lucky Strike. June 30th will be the second tier of the event with an action-packed day including a Football Camp, Cheer Camp, and Health & Education Fair. Youth between the ages of 8 – 17 will participate in aged-based activities to enhance their skills in teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship. Camp participants will be instructed directly by current and former NFL players who will be sharing their life lessons in attempt to teach success fundamentals. The Health & Education Fair is designed to heighten awareness of common health problems, increase access to community service organizations and provide resources for the youth and the community to learn more about educational opportunities.

Many of the 500 participants from last year’s GIC are returning to enjoy the highly anticipated NFL Players Celebrity Flag-Football Game, which will give fans a close-up view of some of the industry’s biggest names in action. Confirmed GIC participants include: Marcus Spears (Kansas City Chiefs), Robert Wilson (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Cornelius Anthony (San Francisco 49ers), Tyree Davis (Seattle Seahawks, Ben Cavil (Baltimore Ravens), Sammy Davis (San Diego Chargers), Kevin Williams (Houston Texans), Sammy Knight (New Orleans Saints), Jerry Ball (Detroit Lions), Chuck Clements (New York Jets), Dan Pastorini (Houston Oilers), and Milton Wynn (Baltimore Ravens).

Proceeds from the GIC will support the new programs and initiatives of The GridIron Classic Foundation of Triumph (The G.I.F.T), which assist kids in obtaining a solid approach to success in life. Founded on the simple idea of making a difference, major corporations including Reliant Energy, the Kelsey Seybold Clinic, Papa John’s, the Academy Sports+Outdoors, Powerade, Silver Eagle Distributors, and ACME Rental are partnering with Roundtree and the GridIron Classic to bring this idea into reality.
