LEADING TRIATHLETES PUT THROUGH THEIR PACES BY SURREY HUMAN PERFORMANCE INSTITUTE

The Surrey Human Performance Institute welcomed a number of leading triathletes during a weekend of triathlon testing at the annual Triathlon Show at Sandown Park, Surrey.

Following the recent launch of the triathlon facility, the Surrey Human Performance Institute welcomed a number of well-known triathletes and triathlon experts to take part in a series of testing programmes, including a cycling lactate test, a running lactate test and a body composition test.

Those that took part included Vanessa Raw, GB Professional Triathlete and member of the British Olympic Triathlon Academy Squad, the hugely experienced Mark Kleanthous, who has completed over 450 triathlons and 36 Ironmans, and Boo Alder, GB Age Group Professional Triathlete.

British Olympic Triathlon Academy Squad member Vanessa Raw highlighted the importance and benefits of the tests offered at the Surrey Human Performance Institute;

“It’s important to take part in a series of tests regularly. I have only recently started training properly for this year so I would expect to improve quickly, so it’s important I am tested regularly to ensure I’m training in the right zones. Being able to see yourself improve helps with your motivation and you can set yourself goals.”

Joe Wainwright, Surrey Human Performance Institute Manager, said;

"Knowing your lactate threshold helps you to be more specific with your training because it’s a moveable point and is your best performance predictor for endurance sports, such as triathlon.”

The Surrey Human Performance Institute, located at Surrey Sports Park, offers elite level health and performance assessments to anyone who is looking to compete and improve. The testing facilities provide triathletes with the opportunity to learn about their health and optimise their training. Surrey Human Performance Institute offer clients three packages starting from £99, which cater for first time triathlon participants to experienced elite triathletes, and provide bespoke 12 week training programmes, body composition analysis, exercise threshold testing and strength and conditioning assessments which are tailored to swimming, cycling and running.

Following the testing programme triathlon expert and coach Mark Kleanthous said;

“Most people think that having scientific testing done and getting feedback is just for professional athletes but I totally disagree. Age group athletes don’t have the time to train as much and need to be really specific with their heart rate zones in training. People like to train a lot but they don’t necessarily like to be tested but that time spent being tested can be very beneficial.”

The Surrey Human Performance Institute is also holding a weekend triathlon training camp for all levels, offering expertise, testing and advice on how to train smarter over the weekend of 5th and 6th April at Surrey Sports Park.

Gavin Baker, Head of Sport and Performance at Surrey Sports Park, said;

“Our training camps include individual work and group workshops. Not only will guests be able to take part in the tests which we ran at the Triathlon Show but also further tests with our scientists, strength and conditioning coaches and nutritionists, who can provide guests with some really in-depth practical knowledge, which they can take back to their training programmes and future competitions.”
