  • Two Highland clubs commended in inaugural golf tourism awards
  • Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart feature on shortlist
  • Further boost for region as golfing destination

Facilities and customer care at two of the Highlands’ leading golf clubs have been recognised by visitors in an online poll.

Royal Dornoch Golf Club and Castle Stuart Golf Links were finalists in separate categories in the inaugural Scottish Golf Tourism Awards which celebrated the courses, clubs and individuals that excelled in delivering quality, service and value for money to visiting golfers in 2014.

Royal Dornoch was shortlisted for the main accolade of Scotland’s Best Golf Experience and in the Best Catering category.

Castle Stuart made the final four clubs vying for the Best Customer Service and Best Clubhouse categories.

The awards were sponsored by VisitScotland in association with the PGA in Scotland, the Scottish Golf Union and Golf Tourism Scotland, as well as bunkered which conducted the online poll of golfers. The presentations were made at a ceremony at the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews on 7 November.

Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart are part of the Highland Golf Links (HGL) partnership, which also includes The Nairn Golf Club and the Kingsmills Hotel and Culloden House Hotel, Inverness; the Royal Golf Hotel in Dornoch and the Golf View Hotel & Spa in Nairn. HGL promotes Play and Stay destination breaks in the region for golfers.

Fraser Cromarty, the HGL chairman, said: “Being shortlisted in these prestigious awards is a fantastic achievement by Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart and demonstrates the quality product we offer in the Highlands to golfers.

“It enhances the area’s standing as a golfing destination in its own right. Visitors who come to this area for a golfing break can be sure they will enjoy some of the best scenery, best courses and best facilities and customer care around.”

Castle Stuart Golf Links hosted the Scottish Open for three successive years from 2011-2013 and will hold the event again in 2016. This year the club was awarded a prestigious GEO Certified ecolabel, an international symbol of ‘great golf environments’.

Royal Dornoch’s Championship Course has been voted the 6th best golf course in the world by leading magazine Golf Digest. It has hosted a number of leading events, including the Senior Ladies British Open Amateur Championship in September.
