SAVE NEARLY $200 ON THANKSGIVING TRAVEL: BOOK FLIGHTS EARLY, HOTELS LATE
Data from Travel Company Hipmunk Reveals Tips for Agony-Free Thanksgiving Travel
SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 13, 2014) — It may be the dog days of summer, but now is the time to start thinking about turkey, stuffing, and football. Travel company Hipmunk evaluated historical travel data and found that by booking Thanksgiving airfare now but making hotel reservations in November, travelers can amass savings of almost $200
Hipmunk found that Thanksgiving flight rates increase dramatically the longer travelers wait to book. On average, early birds who booked the week before Labor Day spent $424 on airfare, while those who booked during the week of Thanksgiving spent an average of $561—a difference of almost $140.
To save even more this Thanksgiving, however, it pays to procrastinate on hotel reservations. Last year, those who booked in August spent an average of $177. Procrastinators who waited to reserve their hotels in November saved nearly $50 and spent an average of $131.
“When it comes to holiday travel, timing is key,” said Dr. Chris Slowe, chief scientist at Hipmunk. “Knowing when to purchase airfare at the lowest price or which day of the week to fly to avoid crowds will help take the agony out of the holiday travel experience.”
According to Hipmunk’s analysis, 62 percent of Thanksgiving flyers departed the Tuesday or Wednesday before the holiday and 88 percent returned the Saturday or Sunday after the holiday. To avoid long lines, fly Monday or even on the holiday itself, and then return the Friday after.
