Token brick ceremony for new housing scheme

A ceremony was held on Tuesday 26 February to mark the laying of a token brick at a new Housing 21 extra care housing scheme for older people in Horley.

Representatives of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council joined Housing 21 and Barratt Southern Counties to celebrate the occasion at the site of Anvil Court in Blacksmith Road, Horley

The brick was laid by Ray Langley, Housing Development Manager at Reigate & Banstead Borough Council who has been working on the planning and delivery of this scheme for a number of years.

Due for completion in September, the new facility will provide 60 apartments with options to rent or to purchase on a shared ownership basis. The development will also include a restaurant, activity room and hairdressing salon.

Ben Slater, Projects Development Manager for Housing 21 said: “We’re delighted with the progress being made at Anvil Court and it’s exciting to see the new building taking shape. This development will provide older people in Reigate and Banstead with excellent accommodation and facilities.”

Cllr Julian Ellacott, Executive Member for Housing and Welfare at Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, said: “This is east Surrey’s first new-build extra care scheme, and has been an aspiration of the Council for many years. The Council’s Corporate Plan includes themes around affordable housing for older people and promoting self-reliance; Anvil Court ticks the box on both of these issues.”

Peter Green, Project Director at Barratt Southern Counties commented: “Barratt Homes is thrilled to be working with Housing 21 and that the extra care housing scheme is underway. We look forward welcoming older residents to Anvil Court at The Acres later this year. The Acres has been a hugely popular development for us and we are proud to be delivering some really fantastic and much-needed homes and amenities for all generations in the Horley area.”

Designed to meet the needs of people aged 55 and over, Anvil Court’s one and two bedroom apartments will have fully fitted kitchens and level access showers. Residents will benefit from a secure door entry system with intercom to every apartment, a court manager service and an emergency call system.

Extra care housing is an increasingly popular choice because it allows residents to enjoy independent living in their own home but with the added benefit of care and support available if required. 

The development has been partly funded with a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.
