My Care Text’s cloud-based messaging system updates status of patients undergoing surgery to waiting family and friends

Atlanta, GA --- MyCareText, an e3DataSolutions project, has joined the Interoperability and Integration Innovation Lab (I3L), at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  The company, which will be an I3L charter member of the Start-ups and Entrepreneurs Suite, has also joined the Advanced Technology Development Center at Georgia Tech.

MyCareText is an innovative, cloud-based messaging system that updates the status of patients undergoing surgery to family and friends in the waiting area via their mobile devices.  Patient privacy is fully protected with state-of-the-art, proprietary data encryption methods.

The major benefits are obvious, including significantly reduced stress on those awaiting periodic updates on the patient’s progress, and on hospital staff who deal with an understandable, but unpredictable, series of interruptions for status updates on patients in surgery.  The bottom line is that the estimated efficiency gained by hospital staff is expected to result in cost savings equal to approximately half of a full time employee.

MyCareText’s development team will work with I3L engineers to integrate the flow of patient status update information into the hospital’s electronic health record system.  This will serve to create an even more efficient workflow for clinical staff and create a more comprehensive patient care record for the healthcare delivery team.

“We designed MyCareText with three basic goals in mind:  to significantly improve the waiting room experience, increase the efficiency of staff, and reduce operating costs to the facility as staff efficiency increases,” said MyCareText founder and principal Bill Cooey.

According to Cooey, status updates on a patient naturally decreases anxiety in the waiting room. This leads directly to the patient ultimately reporting increased satisfaction scores for the hospital, important for both driving referral business and the required quality reporting being implemented industry-wide.

"This is one of those healthcare delivery solutions that makes everyone say, ‘Why hasn’t this been done before?’” said Steve Rushing, director of I3L Strategy.  “Technology like this not only improves the experience for the patient and those who care about that person, but drives a positive ROI. It’s a true ‘win’ for all involved.”

About MyCareText

Initial development for MyCareText began in November 2011, when the chief of surgery at Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, D.C. noticed a glaring need for better communication in hospital waiting rooms.  In search of a solution to this problem, he reached out to e3datasolutions, an applications development company based in Atlanta, GA.  By working together, e3datasolutions was able to build an effective solution to the problem presented by CNMC.  The MyCareText system was officially launched in early 2012 after extensive beta testing yielded positive results among healthcare providers.

As MyCareText is a cloud-based system, no time is wasted waiting on lengthy, complicated software installs.  The product is customized in order to meet the needs of individual hospitals, including adhering to hospital security and branding guidelines.  With a “hands on” approach to rapid implementation and extensive customer support, e3datasolutions provides hospitals with a solid platform for utilizing messaging to improve patient relationships and outcomes.

About the I3L

The Interoperability & Integration Innovation Lab (I3L) is an intra-campus initiative managed and operated by the Georgia Institute of Technology on behalf of its membership and other public-private partnerships, educational institutions, associations and consortia. The collaborative member organization provides conformance standards testing, interoperability evaluation, and commercialization assistance to members by helping them the reduce cycle time and cost of bringing new healthcare technologies to market. The I3L is designed to move the health information technology (HIT) industry to the “future state” required to facilitate patient-centered, economically feasible, improved quality healthcare for the benefit of personal and public health.
