Saxony-Anhalt-based company that’s a live wire

Premiere at the trade fair HANNOVER MESSE 2017 : The company Jan Bilin GmbH wants to become a key player in the world market for lightning and surge protection products

You can feel it: the atmosphere at Jan Bilin GmbH is headily optimistic. Prototypes of a range of different products are on show at the premises of the company which hails from Magdeburg. The offices are home to staff of a variety of nationalities, who alternate between speaking in German and English. And those who talk with the Managing Director quickly find out about what’s coming up at the company’s headquarters in the capital of Saxony-Anhalt – a lot. “We’re on the edge of something,” explains Jörg Müller. In March, the company which wants to make a name for itself in the area of lightning and surge protection technology with a patented innovation, will launch its first range of products on the market, the “Black Series”. In autumn, the “Green Series” will follow. By the end of the year, the company plans to move into new business accommodation in Magdeburg’s east side. It has closed the deal on the purchase of a site with an area of some 10,000 square metres. The work is underway. And in April, the company will be attending the HANNOVER MESSE – at stand B23, hall 13 – where it will present the products with which it intends to conquer the international markets for the first time.

Above all else, these are products which serve the purpose of lightning and surge protection. In simple terms, products which protect equipment and systems from being destroyed by bolts of lightning. “At first glance, it seems unlikely that one place would be repeatedly hit by lightning in the space of a short time,” says Jörg Müller. “On closer observation, however, it isn’t as rare as you might think, even in the case of a single bolt of lightning. In fact, what we perceive as a single bolt of lightning is often a rapid sequence of multiple bolts of lightning. In the case of thunder storms, industrial facilities can be at particular risk.” At Jan Bilin GmbH, what is known as a multi-phase surge protection system has been developed, and is particularly relevant to installations such as data processing centres, hospitals, telecommunications systems and wind energy plants.

In Magdeburg, the start-up wants to establish a production plant for surge protection technology, the beginnings of which date back to the founding of the company in 2014. The managing partner Ping Lin, hailing from China, has also invested in the new business. It is in the city of Nanjing, a metropolis of several million inhabitants situated in the east of China, that Ping Ling worked on the development of new surge protection technology. She explains: “The topic was always of considerable importance to the networks in the research institute at which I worked. Developing these ideas further seemed to be a good idea.” She has also set up her own company in her home town. The investor became aware of Magdeburg due to the persistent work of the international office of the Magdeburg Board of Trade, with business leaders making many trips to China over the years – a key destination being the city of Harbin, a metropolis of some ten million inhabitants and a partner city of Magdeburg, and in which Magdeburg also has a representative office.

Managing Director Jörg Müller explains: “We are developing our products so that they can be made by hand and eventually manufactured on a fully automatic basis.” When it comes to the sale of electrical components in the area of surge protection and the next step, the development of new components and their assembly, the businessman thinks outside of the box. In this respect, the company not only aims to sell its products in Germany, but at the international level as well. The company also wants to benefit from the good reputation that products which are “made in Germany” generally have. Thinking outside of the box also means looking at the local region, however. One of the new company’s important partners, for example, is Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, which is home to a laboratory for surge protection technology and can therefore make a decisive contribution to the research-based development of new products. “This will enable us to complete in-depth research,” explains Jörg Müller. “Without research and development, nothing is possible.” It is for this reason that the new company is also forging contacts in regional, national and international networks.
