Saxony-Anhalt will be displaying new ideas and intelligent and user-friendly solutions in the area of plastics, moulded rubber parts, recycling, compounds, regranulates and lightweight construction from 17 to 21 October 2017 at Fakuma in Friedrichshafen, one of the largest international trade fairs for plastics processing. This is a première for Saxony-Anhalt, since the federal state is presenting its first joint stand.

At the federal state’s joint stand number FO-54, five medium-sized companies from Saxony-Anhalt will be presenting innovations and examples of application in the area of industrial plastics processing. The central German expert network for the plastics industry, Polykum e.V., will also be represented here.

“We want to show that Saxony-Anhalt’s well-networked plastics industry has the expertise to produce new highly efficient polymer-based materials in resource-friendly and energy-efficient production processes, in times of dwindling fossil resources and growing demands on environmental and climate protection”, says Thomas Einsfelder, Managing Director of Investitions- und Marketinggesellschaft Sachsen-Anhalt mbH, which organises the joint stand on behalf of the Ministry of Economics. As the centre of the so-called Central German chemicals triangle, Saxony-Anhalt is a strong location of tradition and innovation for the plastics industry in Europe. Einsfelder: “In 2015, 104 companies of the plastics industry and their around 9,600 employees generated a revenue of more than 3 billion Euros.

An exhibitor at the joint stand, for instance, is ThermHex Waben GmbH from Halle (Saale) with its internationally patented process for continuous honeycomb core production. The company produces plastic honeycomb cores for lightweight boards and lightweight construction parts in one single and especially continuous production step. ThermHex clients process the honeycomb cores, for example, to cladding or structural components for trucks, buses or yachts, prefabricated bathrooms, truck structures or complex nacelle claddings for wind power plants. ThermHex honeycomb cores are only 3.5 mm thick, and ensure a weight reduction of up to 50 percent compared to homogeneous conventional fibre composite panels. The raw material polypropylene is drawn from the Leuna chemical park nearby. The company is currently working with the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS from Halle in a joint research project on the development of manufacturing and processing procedures suitable for the series production of organic sheet sandwich semi-finished products.

Merseburger Aluminium und Kunststoffe AG wants to impress viewers at FAKUMA with its newcycling process. The film recycling process expands the circle of recyclable plastics and is close to being launched on the market. Cheese, meat, sausage and fish are kept fresh in films made of several components. Previous approaches by other processors have relied on mechanical separation. But that is very complicated. The company has now developed a chemical process which facilitates the separation of polyethylene and polyamide and enables further processing for new packaging. The polyethylene and polyamide obtained in this way will be marketed under the names Mersalen and Mersamid.
