Ultra-black: ACM Coatings manufactures a unique product from Israel

ACM Coatings – a specialist in the field of optical technology – has been based in Bad Kösen, Saxony-Anhalt, since 2015. The subsidiary company of the Israeli technology firm Acktar Ltd. operates as the sales and production location for Europe and Switzerland. Here in the heart of Germany and Europe, all signs point to growth: in the medium term, the unique coating processes pioneered by Acktar Ltd., which have previously only taken place in Israel, will also be applied at the firm's location in Saxony-Anhalt. Its products may frequently be jet black – but at this company, the mood is anything but black.
“We occupy a niche within a niche – and we do so with success,” explains Alexander Telle, describing the market positioning of ACM Coatings. With turnover of approximately 30 billion Euros, the optical industry is a relatively small branch of industry in Germany, but it is of huge importance for modern technology in the areas of plant and mechanical engineering, the automotive supply industry, medical technology and many other sectors. This branch of industry originally came to life in central Germany more than 200 years ago. “The proximity to the centre of expertise for the optical industry was a key reason for choosing the location of Bad Kösen,” explains Telle, confirming the importance of the region. “With our coating technology, which is unique worldwide, we are able to achieve first-rate results in the areas of stray light absorption, laser absorption and in applications with high rates of emissions.” It is on this basis that components made in Saxony-Anhalt have made their way into the universe – after all, around fifty percent of the turnover at ACM Coatings is generated in space-travel projects.
The company Acktar Ltd., which was founded in 1994, began its initial operations on the European market in 2005 with the opening of ACM Coatings GmbH in Saxony-Anhalt. With support from the then holding company Sachsen-Anhalt mbH (IBG) as its shareholder, the foundations for the company were then set in place. In 2015, a realignment of the areas of business led to a change in location: to the premises of a former toys factory in Bad Kösen. The coatings products from Acktar are manufactured here in a facility that's some 200 square meters in size: from the laminating of the adhesive through to the production of customer-specific blanks.
Another major remit is sales, along with project management and logistics. Roughly 70 percent of the volume of orders in the Acktar Group relates to special coatings. The coatings are inorganic, completely non-toxic and vacuum-compatible – and can therefore be used throughout all industrial sectors. ACM Coatings is the hub for the orders from all over Europe. The parts to be coated are delivered here, sent on to Israel and finally delivered to the customer again after the completion of the coating. The completion of the orders, including their customs processing, is carried out by ACM Coatings. Another customer benefit is the fact that these orders are classified as business transactions according to European law. For the years to come, an expansion of the operations, including a coating facility with between 10 and 15 additional employees, is planned. "Our specialisation secures our position in the market," says Telle, emphasising the company's commitment. With its own coating plant in Germany, it will be possible for orders to be completed considerably more easily, without restrictions for third countries.
"With the advancing technology, the opportunities for growth are huge," explains Telle. "This is because our products are used in both optical sensors and in modern light sources for instance, such as power-LED-lighting." The niche products already amount to important building blocks in several areas of the industry, including the area of space travel and beyond. In the area of mechanical and plant engineering, automation now demands the use of optical sensors for control systems. Optical sensors are indispensable in the field of autonomous driving. In many large-scale logistics companies, autonomously driving vans and forklift trucks are now being used, the functional capability of which has only been made possible by optical sensors. "Our products might be a tiny part of the whole – but they have a considerable impact.” Such is the conclusion reached by Alexander Telle.
