100,000 users of IVU.realtime.app throughout Europe

Berlin, 7 July 2014 – When will the next bus come? In the past, passengers had to study complicated printed timetables to find out. That was inconvenient and did not help much if the bus failed to turn up at the expected time. But now public transport companies are able to offer smartphone apps based on the IVU.realtime.app so that passengers can determine at any stage of their journey when the next bus will depart. This app, available for a number of networks throughout Europe, has now been downloaded for the 100,000th time from the iOS and Android stores. And since last week, customers of the MVG public transport company (Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft) also have mobile access to real-time data.

In contrast to a static timetable, the IVU.realtime.app shows the live bus departure times to users anywhere at any time. When a query is received, the app from IVU Traffic Technologies AG responds within seconds to provide real-time data to the smartphone directly from the operational control centre. This means that customers can always find out when a bus will depart – whether they are waiting at the bus stop, are about to leave home, or are actually on the bus. “100,000 downloads highlights the growing need passengers have for comprehensive information”, comments Andreas Gross-Weege, Division Manager Aachen for Public Transport and member of the IVU management team. “Mobile passenger information is a key component for the public transport systems of today and tomorrow.”

The system has already been implemented by public transport companies across Europe. It is used to plan journeys by passengers in London and customers of APAM in the Italian city of Mantua. In Germany, the app is available for the services provided by ASEAG in Aachen or wupsi (Kraftverkehr Wupper-Sieg) in Leverkusen and the Rheinisch-Bergische district. Beginning this month, trips with the buses and trams of the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) can also be planned with the IVU.realtime.app. At the official launch on Friday, Jochen Erlhof, Managing Director of MVG explained: “With the new app we offer our customers a further opportunity to plan their journeys with MVG flexibly in accordance with their personal wishes. They receive all the information directly to their smartphone. This brings our service closer to our passengers.”

In order to make this service possible, the background system IVU.realtime continually monitors the position of each vehicle. Any interruptions or operative delays are also registered. From this data, the system calculates to the nearest minute the updated departure times from a stop and all the subsequent stops on that route. Passengers can see at a glance when the next bus or tram will depart and whether they will reach their destination punctually or make their connection. The IVU.realtime.app can also help users to plan their journey by displaying all the stops in their vicinity by means of GPS locating, and can help with the search for a stop on the street map or by name. Frequently used stops can be bookmarked for convenient access.
