Express modernisation of operational control by IVU AG

Berlin/Budapest, 21 October 2014 – In an official ceremony István Tarlós, Mayor of Budapest, and Dávid Vitézy, CEO of the city’s public transport authority BKK, inaugurated the city’s new AVL system, including an all-new, modern operational control centre. IVU Traffic Technologies AG implemented the project in record time with the standard products of the IVU.suite.

“When we know how things are going to turn out in books or films we find it boring. But in our everyday lives we strive for predictability, especially with public transport.” With these words, István Tarlós together with Dávid Vitézy handed over the new AVL system to BKK (Budapesti Közlekedési Központ / Centre for Budapest Transport). Also taking part in the inauguration ceremony were representatives of IVU Traffic Technologies AG and other project partners.

The new operational control centre with 32 workplaces was set up as part of the ambitious FUTÁR project, which has the goal of thoroughly modernising public transport in Budapest. Completion in only two years was made possible by IVU.xpress. This IT process defines specific project steps so that the standard software from IVU AG can be installed rapidly in heterogeneous IT environments. In the course of the project, the previous systems were replaced by a modern AVL system, with additional functions being included. The aim was to increase the reliability of public transport services and to provide better information for the passengers. In his address, Mayor István Tarlós concluded that this had been achieved very successfully.

The modules of the IVU.suite provide the basis for controlling some 2,200 buses, trams and trolley buses operating on 220 lines in the Hungarian capital. The fleet management system IVU.fleet ensures that the control personnel have a complete overview at all times of the current traffic situation, the locations of all vehicles, and any disturbances. All the vehicles, including the transport boat services on the River Danube, have been equipped with an IVU.box on-board computer to provide the necessary real-time data for operational control and also for the passenger information service. The devices are so flexible that they can easily be adapted to suit the widely varying demands of the heterogeneous BKK fleet.

The most obvious signs of the comprehensive modernisation of Budapest’s public transport system are the digital passenger information displays which have been set up at some 300 stops all over Budapest. These displays are directly connected by means of IVU.realtime to the operational control centre and they provide live departure times to the nearest minute for all vehicles and ships from the stops or connection nodes.

For the future, BKK is planning further investments in infrastructure and technical equipment: “Our aim is to constantly improve our system and make public transport more attractive”, says Dávid Vitézy, the CEO of BKK “By 2030 we would like to have a modal share of 80 % environmentally-friendly transport modes in Budapest.” IVU Division Manager Dr Andreas Groß-Weege adds: “Thanks to IVU.xpress we have been able to implement the new operational control system in the shortest of times. We are very proud that following on from Berlin, Vienna, Zurich, Stockholm, Milan and London we are now able to count another major European city among our customers.”
